Commenting on Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to the United States, Yang Xiyu, senior research fellow from the China Institute of International Studies, said the visit won’t be a big concern for China.
He told CGTN’s “World Insight with Tian Wei” that China is confident Sino-US relations remain the most important bilateral relation in the world. The only concern China has and will closely watch is how the US President Donald Trump reacts to Article 5 under the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the US and Japan, which covers the dispute over the Diaoyu Islands. When asked about how US-Japan relations will affect the regional security in Asia, Yang said great uncertainties still remain.
“The US has reshaped Japan from aggressive militarist into pacifist Japan. Asian countries have enjoyed a pacifist Japan for seven decades. But Japan is turning into something new.”
Yang pointed out that no one knows what Abe’s “active pacifist” means, adding what we’ve seen is Japan insisting on a wrong position and, rearming after consistently accusing China as a military threat.
