19 poly students arrested for alleged assault in Ibadan

Nineteen students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, have been arrested by the Oyo State Police Command for allegedly invading the command headquarters on Friday.
Among those arrested was the President of the school’s Students’ Union Government, Oluwadamilola Edema.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the students entered the command during Jumaat service and pretended to be heading for the mosque located within the command’s premises.
He said the students, however, took a route that led to the office of the state Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, claiming that they came for the release of two of their colleagues who were earlier arrested by the police.
Ajisebutu said despite being told that none of their colleagues was in police custody at the headquarters or any of the station under the command, the students refused to leave the premises. He said, “They mobilised themselves to the headquarters. There is a mosque at the headquarters that is open to members of the public every Friday. The students pretended to be going to observe Jummat service at the mosque, that is why they were allowed in.
“After they gained entrance, they went straight to the office of the Commissioner of Police singing solidarity songs and assaulting policemen on duty. They were also demanding the release of two of their colleagues that were arrested.”
The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police held a meeting with the representatives of the school authorities and the students on Saturday.
One of the students, who spoke on condition of anonymity, however, claimed that the students were agitated when a policeman pointed his gun at them, alleging that the student leaders were beaten.
