UN Secretary-General condemns DPRK’s ballistic missile launch

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday denounced the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s ballistic missile launched early on Sunday, calling it a “further troubling violation” of Security Council resolutions.
“The DPRK leadership must return to full compliance with its international obligations and to the path of denuclearization,” Guterres said in a statement.
The UN Security Council was scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Monday afternoon on the DPRK’s missile launch. The DPRK announced on Monday that it successfully test-fired a new type of medium to long-range ballistic missile on Sunday.
State-run KCNA news agency said the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, supervised the launch. It also said the missile was capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and was an upgraded version of the submarine-launched ballistic missile which was tested last August. This latest missile launch has been widely condemned by the international community.
China on Monday expressed strong opposition, noting DPRK’s act breached the UN’s resolutions.
“China is against the DPRK's missile launch which has violated the UN Security Council resolutions,” said spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Geng Shuang."Related parties should not provoke each other at present, and intensify tensions on the Korean Peninsula,” he said.
The ballistic missile was fired on Sunday morning towards the east coast of the Korean Peninsula, with Seoul and Tokyo immediately condemning the launch.
South Korea said the DPRK’s threats to its military and security are “serious.”
“(The DPRK) is giving us a message that it will continue to provoke without giving up its ambitions for nuclear state status,” said Jeong Joon-hee, spokesman for the South Korean Unification Ministry.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the test "absolutely intolerable" during his official visit to the US. While US President Donald Trump said that, "America stands behind Japan, its great ally, 100 percent".
NATO has also criticized the test, with Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urging Pyongyang "not to raise tensions further and to re-engage in a credible and meaningful dialogue with the international community".
The European Union joined in with the criticism, saying the move was a "repeated disregard" of the DPRK's "international obligations".
