Bills Upgrading Mapoly To Varsity, New Poly Pass Second Reading

The bills seeking the upgrade of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic to a University of Technology as well as that which seeks the establishment of new Ogun State Polytechnics to be cited at Ipokia have scaled first and second readings on the floor of the State House of Assembly.
This development is being done with an assurance that the two bills when operational would help produce more technologically advanced human resource that will drive the socio- economic development of the State and the nation.
This was the summation of views of lawmakers who spoke during the second reading of the bills on the floor of the House; shortly after the Clerk of the Assembly, Engr Lanre Bisiriyu did the first reading of the bills before members of the Assembly. The bills titled: “HB No. 10/OG/2017- A bill for a law to provide for the Establishment of Moshood Abiola University of Technology and for matters of Administration and Discipline of Students Connected Therewith, HB No. 11/OG/2017- A bill for a law to provide for the Establishment, Incorporation, Constitution and Functions of the Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia and for other matters Incidental Thereto or Connected Therewith”.
Opening debate on the bills, Majority Leader, Adeyinka Mafe, said that the establishment of a specialized university of technology and creation of new polytechnics in the State became expedient in view of the developing nature of the nation which needed more technologically advanced professionals who would address emerging development challenges with a view to driving the State and the nation to economic prosperity.
Also, lawmakers including Deputy Speaker Olakunle Oluomo, Honourables Jimi Otukoya, Oludotun Fasanya, Akanbi Bankole, Tunde Sanusi, Olayiwola Ojodu, Idowu Olowofuja and Adebiyi Adeleye, pointed out that the upgrading of the existing the polytechnics to university and the establishment of a new polytechnics at Ipokia would further reposition the state’s educational sector towards creating avenues for research and training of more scientists that would further advance development of the State.
Describing science and technology as the bedrock of societal development, the Assemblymen explained that MAPOLY on its part in the last four decades had groomed competent manpower who had distinguished themselves and contributed meaningfully to the development of the State and the nation at large, adding that the upgrade and establishment would give opportunities to prospective admission seekers in the country to attain quality tertiary education.
They explained that the new polytechnics would give opportunity to the products of the various ICT institutions to complete their HND programmes and make them complete professionals in the chosen fields.
In their various contributions, Honourables Julianah Akintayo, Akinpelu Aina, Adebowale Ojuri, Yetunde Sogbein and Viwanu Ojo said that the upgrade of MAPOLY to University of Technology and the establishment of a new polytechnic would create more research based institutions that improve on all human endeavours; commending the timely initiative of the Senator Ibikunle Amosun’s administration in taking tertiary education to the grassroots.
Responding, the Speaker, Rt. Hon Suraju Ishola Adekunbi thanked the members for their robust debate on the bills and thereafter committed the bills to the Committee on Education, Science and Technology for other necessary legislative actions.
