Multinational oil coys responsible for violence in Niger Delta – NDYP

Some concerned youths from the nine states of the Niger Delta, under the aegis of Niger Delta Youth Patriots, have accused multinational oil companies of the orgy of violence that has engulfed the region over the years.
The NDYP stated this in a communiqué issued after its national convention in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, on Saturday.
The group highlighted neglect, insensitivity, divide-and-rule, poor incentives, among others, by oil multinationals as the reasons behind youths’ restiveness and agitations in the region.
The National President, NDYP, Mr. David Awasa, said the injustices created in the remote oil-producing communities by oil multinationals had continued to ignite counter-activities from the host communities where oil is produced.
Awasa said, “After a long period of research on the solutions to the Niger Delta problems, it was observed that the majority of the problems are directly or indirectly contributed by the oil multinationals.
”We carried out our investigation in the remote areas around the oil producing communities by the multinational companies.
“Technically these problems are done in the remote areas where over 75 per cent of oil installations are located.”
He said the NDYP, poised to proffer meaningful solutions to the myriad of problems facing various communities in the region, embarked on fact-finding mission aimed at identifying the cause of agitations and providing empowerment programmes to affected communities. He said the NDYP had formed a strong synergy with public-spirited individuals and humanitarian organisations to promote peace and stability in the region through advocacy and empowerment.
Awasa said the group had introduced entrepreneurial empowerment skills as well as other programmes aimed at discouraging youths from engaging in kidnapping, sea piracy, pipeline vandalism, arms dealing and other vices.
According to him, the NDYP has also designed a micro and macro mechanized farming project to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and will formally be presented as part of the measures to maximize food security in the region and Nigeria at large .
He said the project if adopted by the agriculture ministry would go a long way in solving the myriad of problems in the region, adding that if the ministry did contrary, youths’ restiveness would remain unabated.
He noted, “It has been discovered that the techniques and tools used by youths in the early 1980s and 1990s are not the same as the ones used recently because of current advanced technology and information exposure.”
The Chairman of Bayelsa State chapter of NDYP, Chief Peter Edege, noted that the group was well constituted to empower the people of the oil rich region, especially at the grassroots communities where oil is explored.
Edege said the group had made adequate representations to the government to make it understand and appreciate the challenges of Niger Delta people.
