China wants Germany to give full support to economic globalization and free trade as the world sees a rising tide of anti-globalization sentiment, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his German counterpart Sigmar Gabriel on Thursday.
China and Germany are important members of the G20 group, and the two countries should push forward economic globalization, free trade and investment, Wang said, adding that China would fully cooperate with Germany on deepening economic globalization.
Wang urged Germany to play a positive role in the EU fulfilling its promise in China’s Accession Protocol to the World Trade Organization.
He noted that 2017 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral ties, and applauded the diplomatic achievements made by the two countries. He urged both sides to further deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership.
The two sides held talks in Bonn, where foreign ministers from the G20 economies are currently meeting.
Sigmar Gabriel said German carmakers are seeking to work with the green car market in China, and that he hopes the Chinese government can further remove obstacles for German investment in local firms.
China surpassed the United States last year to become the largest maker of electric vehicles, thanks to a raft of government incentives to promote the switch from petrol to electricity as the country battles heavy pollution.
Sales of battery electric and plug-in hybrids increased 60 percent from January-November 2016, to 402,000 vehicles. By 2020, China wants 5 million plug-in cars on its roads.
In September, Volkswagen AG signed a deal with China's Anhui Jianghuai Automobile (JAC Motor) to explore making electric vehicles in a new joint venture.
The two sides also discussed issues related to the situation on the Korean Peninsula and Afghanistan.
