Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is to play at Anfield again after signing up for a legends match against Real Madrid next month.
Gerrard’s last appearance at the ground ended in a 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in May 2015, and he left Liverpool that summer to join Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy.
Having returned to Merseyside in November following the end of his LA Galaxy contract and the announcement of his retirement, the ex-England international has since taken up a youth coach role at Liverpool’s academy and been a regular visitor to Anfield as a spectator.Gerrard has joined a host of former players, including Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher, in agreeing to play in the charity match on March 25.
“I’m really looking forward to playing in the LFC Foundation Legends Charity match — Anfield will always hold a special place in my heart,” Gerrard told Liverpool’s official website.
“It’s a real honour to be sharing the pitch with such a great team of legends whilst raising money for the club’s official charity.”
All proceeds from the match will support the foundation’s charity programmes and partnerships, which aim to improve the health and life chances of children and young people on Merseyside and elsewhere.
