The new Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said US President Donald
Trump has not clearly endorsed or opposed the border tax proposal, despite
Trump asking for a change in the way US imports are taxed.
Ross spoke to reporters after Trump's first speech, and said Trump
was merely pointing out an export tax inequity between the US and many other
countries, but didn't say how to fix it. Ross also added that other countries
make the US pay very high tariffs and taxes, but the US charges nothing or
almost nothing on imports.
In a joint session of
Congress, Trump emphasized some countries taking 100 percent of tariffs on
"Made in US" goods like Harley-Davidson motorbikes. The proposed
border tax is under attack from import-heavy businesses, but is supported by
large exporters.
