Kogi staff screening: Federal lawmaker kicks against planned sack of workers

Following the release of the controversial Kogi State Staff verification report where about 65% of workforce were declared ghost workers, member representing Ankpa/Omala/Olamaboro federal constituency, Hon. Hassan Atayoma Omale has advised against sack of workers.
In an interview with DAILY POST in Abuja, he explained that governor Yahaya Bello-led administration had been screening workers in the last one year, but did not produce credible reports. He wondered why the government was declaring those who are physically present as ghost workers, stressing that hardship has stepped in and at its peak following the unfortunate screening.
“There have been screening of workers in Kogi State, even those who have been physically present were declared ghost workers
I remember the Rector, Deputy Rector, and the Registrar of Kogi State Polytechnic have been declared ghost in the report,” he noted.
He described as unfortunate the employment going on amid the confusion, saying the governor has employed more people in the last one year than the 16 years civil administration in the state.
“While declaring some genuine workers as ghost, employment was equally going on in the state.”“Employment carried out by Bello’s administration in the last one year, is more than that of 16 years of civil administration in the state,” he added.
According to him, strike which was been planned by workers following the intention to sack them was the best way to go.
He recalled that the state government has asked the Vice Chancellor of the State University to resign over what they claimed was stagnation in the institution, saying academic system should be left to run professionally.
He, however, admitted that they may be ghost workers, but that it was out of place that those posted to rural areas be labelled as ghost because they were not located at the headquarters.“They may be pockets of ghost workers. In a situation where somebody is working in Lagos and has his names on Kogi voucher, it is appropriate to be dealt with, but those working at their outstation like Kabba, Bassa, Okene to be declared as ghost workers is unacceptable,” he maintained.
