The Federal Polytechnic, Mubi branch of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, has withdrawn its membership of ASUP.
Announcing the suspension of its ties with the national body, the branch chairman of ASUP, Mubi, Martins Bunu, also conveyed the decision of the chapter to discontinue its participation in the national strike action embarked upon by the body.
Bunu said the decision of the body to pull out of ASUP was taken to protest its displeasure with the National Executive Council of ASUP’s handling of the raging internal crisis rocking the branch.
He alleged that instead of addressing the internal crisis besetting its branch without bias, the council imposed an individual on the branch.
He claimed that aside apart from an alleged planned imposition of Mallam Kabiru Mohammed, who was allegedly impeached by the Mubi ASUP branch, it was also at odds with the leadership style demonstrated by the National Executive Council of ASUP led by Mallam Usman Dutse.
He cited the example of the recent invasion of the institution during the Boko Haram insurgency which claimed the lives of many lecturers and students, adding that the national leadership of ASUP did not only fail to visit the union but it also deemed it fit not to commiserate with the branch.
“We members of ASUP in Mubi have decided to detach ourselves from our national union for now, pending when the national leadership will consider us as stakeholders in the union.
“We feel neglected and ignored when it comes to the issue of welfare especially when we lost our members during the insurgency attack and the national body looked the other way.
“It is quite disheartening that when we were on exodus to Cameroun, ASUP was still deducting our dues yet the leadership did not deem fit to identify with us,’’ he said.
