Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman rejected allegations that
the country's ambassador to the US is a spy, when she was asked about meetings
between the US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Russian ambassador Sergey
Kislyak.
Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman, insisted Kislyak was "a
well-known, world-class diplomat."
US Attorney General Jeff Sessions met twice with Russian
ambassador Sergey Kislyak last year, Washington Post disclosed on Wednesday.
Sessions received Kislyak in his Senate office in September and also met him in
July at a Heritage Foundation event at the Republican National Convention that
was attended by about 50 ambassadors.
But Sessions maintained he did nothing wrong by failing to
disclose their meeting and that he would stay out of any probe into alleged
Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
Sessions is a longtime US senator who was an early and
high-ranking player in US President Donald Trump's campaign before becoming the
country's top law enforcement official.
The president backed Sessions, saying Democrats had politicized
the issue and calling the controversy a "total witch hunt."
However, Sessions' announcement did nothing to quell concerns
among congressional Democrats, a number of whom called for Sessions to step
down.
