South
Korea’s military has formally signed a land swap deal with the Lotte Group for
a site to host the THAAD missile defense system. This opens the way for the
deployment to go ahead, despite the objections raised by China and Russia, and
protests by its own citizens.
On
CGTN’s "Dialogue with Yang Rui", US commentator Harvey Dzodin
employed sarcasm to express his displeasure first with Kim Jong Un for creating
an unstable environment.
“Thank
you, Kim Jong Un. Under your leadership, you’ve achieved the impossible by
potentially bringing together the US and China to undo the mess that you’ve
created.”
Yang
Xiyu, senior fellow of the China Institute of International Studies, worried
that US actions were also adding to instability in the region.
“We will have a
multi-dimensional crisis because having THAAD in South Korea will open the way
for building up a regional missile defense system that will break the strategic
balance between China and the US, and Russia and the US.”
Addressing the potential
legal ramifications of Chinese boycotts of Lotte businesses under WTO rules,
legal expert Tao Jingzhou, managing partner of Dechert LLP China, suggested,
“Of course, for ordinary consumers, if they don’t want to buy Lotte products,
there is no liability whatsoever. But for the companies that have a contractual
relationship with Lotte, by breaching the contract, Lotte may look for the commercial
responsibility for compensation.”
